Blue Goldstone is a man-made crystal crafted from glass and quartz sand, prized by collectors for its shimmering, starry appearance. Often called blue sandstone or star stone, it's a tactile pocket stone you can carry anywhere — and at 3–5 cm per piece, it sits comfortably in the palm. We've been stocking crystals at the Amsterdam shop since the late '90s, and this one keeps pulling people in for the same reason every time: it genuinely looks like a piece of the night sky.

Why pick up a Blue Goldstone?

Blue Goldstone is the stone we'd hand to someone who wants the visual drama of a galaxy crystal without the price tag of rare minerals. The shimmer isn't a coating or a trick of the light — it's tiny flecks of copper or cobalt suspended inside the glass during the heating process, which is why it catches light at every angle. Hold one under a desk lamp and you'll see what we mean.

It's also a stone with a story. Blue sandstone is thought to be a stone of ambition and confidence — something to keep close during moments of self-doubt or when you need a nudge toward self-expression. We're not making medical claims here. People keep it on their desks, in pockets, or on bedside tables because it looks beautiful and because the ritual of carrying a stone you've chosen yourself has its own quiet value.

Natural or Polished — which finish?

Both variants are the same material at the same 3–5 cm size range. The difference is purely surface texture and how the shimmer reads.

VariantSurfaceBest for
Natural (SM0789)Raw, rougher edges, matte patchesDisplay pieces, collectors who want a more "geological" look, altar setups
Polished (SM0790)Smooth, glossy, mirror-like shimmerPocket stones, worry stones, gifts — the starry effect is more pronounced

If you're undecided: the polished version is the one most people pick for carrying. Natural sits better in a collection alongside other raw specimens.

What Blue Goldstone actually is

Blue Goldstone is a manufactured stone, not a mined mineral — and that's not a downside. It's made by heating glass with quartz sand and metal salts (typically cobalt for the blue colour), then cooling it slowly so micro-crystals form inside. Those micro-crystals are what scatter the light into that starfield effect. The technique dates back to 17th-century Italian glassmakers, who reportedly stumbled onto the original "goldstone" recipe by accident.

Because it's glass-based, it's harder than most natural stones in terms of scratch resistance against soft surfaces, but it will chip if you drop it on tile. Keep it away from harder gemstones in a shared pouch.

Pairs well with our Clear Quartz tumbled stones if you're building a desk set, or with a small velvet pouch if you're carrying it daily. The polished Blue Goldstone also sits nicely alongside Sodalite in a blue-themed collection.

How to use and care for your stone

  1. Unwrap and inspect — each stone is hand-picked, so the shimmer pattern will be unique to yours.
  2. Wipe it down with a soft, damp cloth to remove any handling dust. Skip the soap and never use ultrasonic cleaners.
  3. Choose its spot — pocket, desk, windowsill, altar, or display tray. Direct sunlight is fine; prolonged heat exposure is not.
  4. If you're carrying it daily, keep it separate from keys and coins. Glass-based stones chip when they collide with metal.
  5. Re-wipe whenever it loses its shine — fingerprints dull the shimmer faster than dust does.

The honest limitations

A few things worth knowing before you order. First: it's man-made, and we're upfront about that. If you're a purist who only collects naturally formed minerals, this isn't for you. Second: every stone is slightly different in shape, size, and shimmer density — we can't promise the exact piece in the photo. That's the trade-off with hand-picked natural-finish products. Third: it's glass at its core. Drop it on a hard floor and you'll chip it. Treat it like a tumbled crystal, not a paperweight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Blue Goldstone a real crystal?

It's a man-made stone, not a mined mineral. Blue Goldstone is crafted from glass fused with quartz sand and metal salts, which creates the shimmering crystalline effect. Many crystal enthusiasts still collect it for its beauty and traditional associations.

What's the difference between Natural and Polished?

Same material, different surface. Natural has a raw, matte texture with rougher edges — better for display. Polished is smooth and glossy, with a more pronounced starry shimmer — better for carrying as a pocket stone.

How do I clean Blue Goldstone?

Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid soap, harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, and prolonged soaking — the glass base doesn't react well to thermal shock or aggressive cleaning agents.

Will my stone look exactly like the photo?

Not exactly. Every stone is hand-picked from a 3–5 cm size range, so shape, weight, and shimmer pattern vary piece to piece. The photo shows a representative example, not the specific stone you'll receive.

Can I take it in the shower or pool?

Best not to. It's water-resistant for a quick wipe, but chlorinated pool water and repeated soaking can dull the surface over time. Keep it dry when you can.

Does Blue Goldstone fade in sunlight?

No — the colour comes from metal salts baked into the glass itself, not a surface coating. Direct sunlight won't fade it, though we wouldn't leave any decorative stone in a hot car window for weeks on end.
