Spore Vials
by Mondo
The Mondo Vial Psilocybe cubensis Golden Teacher is a 10 ml spore suspension vial designed for mycological research and mushroom breeding. Golden Teacher is one of the most widely cultivated Psilocybe cubensis strains on the planet — and for good reason. It produces large, distinctive fruit bodies with golden-brown caps reaching up to 5 cm in diameter, making it a favourite among researchers studying fungal reproduction and spore morphology.
Golden Teacher is the strain that most growers cut their teeth on, and it remains a staple even for experienced cultivators. The name comes from two things: the golden hue of the mature caps and the reputation this strain has for producing clear, introspective effects. The true origin of Golden Teacher is unknown — no one can pin down where or when it first appeared — but it's been circulating in the mycology community for decades and has earned its place as the go-to cubensis variety.
What we can tell you from years behind the counter: Golden Teacher outsells every other spore vial in our catalogue. It's forgiving during colonisation, produces reliably large fruit bodies, and the spores themselves are easy to work with under a microscope. The golden-brown caps are visually striking — thick, fleshy, and often slightly wavy at the edges when mature. If you've ever seen a photo of a "classic" cubensis mushroom, chances are it was a Golden Teacher.

We carry spore vials for a good number of Psilocybe cubensis strains — PES Amazonian, B+, McKennaii, and others. So why does Golden Teacher consistently top the sales charts? It comes down to reliability and size.
Golden Teacher colonises substrates at a steady pace without the fussiness you sometimes get with more exotic strains. The fruit bodies are genuinely large — those 5 cm caps aren't marketing fluff, they're what you'll actually see in a well-maintained fruiting chamber. Compare that to something like McKennaii, which tends to produce smaller but more numerous fruit bodies. B+ is the closest competitor in terms of size and ease of cultivation, but Golden Teacher edges it out on consistency across different substrate types.
The honest limitation? Golden Teacher isn't the fastest coloniser out there. If speed is your priority, B+ or PES Amazonian will outpace it. But for a first cultivation project, or for anyone who wants reliable results without babysitting their substrate every 6 hours, Golden Teacher is the strain we'd point you towards. We've seen thousands of customers start here and come back for more exotic varieties later — but plenty stick with Golden Teacher permanently.
Golden Teacher is one of the more flexible cubensis strains when it comes to substrate choice. The best results come from compost, grain (rye or wheat berries), pasteurised dung, and straw. Grain spawn is the most popular starting point — it colonises evenly and you can break it up to inoculate bulk substrates later.
Temperature control is the single biggest factor in your success. Colonisation wants 28-30 C — a seedling heat mat underneath your containers works well for this. Drop to 22-25 C for fruiting. The most common mistake we see? People keeping the temperature too high during fruiting, which encourages contamination and produces thin, leggy fruit bodies instead of the chunky specimens Golden Teacher is known for.
Sterile technique matters more than any other variable. One ungloved hand touching the inside of a jar lid can introduce Trichoderma or Aspergillus spores that will outcompete your mycelium within days. The two alcohol swabs included in the kit are a start, but if you're serious about cultivation, stock up on isopropyl alcohol (70%), nitrile gloves, and consider building or buying a still air box. We've seen growers lose entire batches to a single moment of carelessness — it's not worth the risk.
Psilocybe cubensis contains several tryptamine compounds that are structurally similar to the neurotransmitter serotonin. According to research published in Drug Testing and Analysis, "psilocybin, psilocin, baeocystin, norbaeocystin, and aeruginascin are tryptamines structurally similar to the neurotransmitter serotonin" (PubMed, 2020). These compounds are what make Psilocybe cubensis a subject of intense scientific interest.
According to a 2024 study published in Behavioural Brain Research, Psilocybe cubensis extract was observed to potently prevent fear responses in animal models (PubMed, 2024). And a 2025 review in Molecules noted that "numerous studies have highlighted the therapeutic potential of psychedelics in clinical applications, particularly in treating mental health disorders" (PMC, 2025). Research into psilocybin-assisted therapy for depression is ongoing, with one proposal noting that "the pharmacological treatment of depression consists of taking antidepressant drugs for prolonged periods; its modest therapeutic effect can often be" insufficient for many patients (PubMed, 2023).
This is an active and rapidly evolving area of research. We're not scientists — but we've been following these developments since we opened in 1999, and the volume of peer-reviewed work coming out in the last 5 years alone is remarkable.
Complete your cultivation setup with a Mondo Grow Kit if you want a ready-to-fruit option, or grab additional spore vials like the Mondo Vial Psilocybe cubensis PES Amazonian or B+ to compare strains side by side. A still air box and a digital thermometer with hygrometer are the two accessories that make the biggest difference to your success rate.
You'll get 3-5 inoculations from a single 10 ml vial, using 2-3 ml per jar or bag. That's enough for a solid first run with grain spawn jars. Shake the vial well before each draw to keep the spore distribution even.
Stored upright in a refrigerator at 2-8 C, an unopened Mondo spore vial keeps for several months. Once you've punctured the rubber cap, use the remaining suspension within a few weeks for best results. Never freeze the vial — ice crystals destroy spore cells.
A spore vial stores the suspension in a sealed glass container with a rubber septum, which stays sterile across multiple uses. A spore syringe is pre-loaded and single-use. Vials are better if you plan to inoculate several batches over time — you draw what you need and reseal.
Psilocybin is one of the most studied tryptamines in current clinical research. According to a 2025 review in PMC, numerous studies have examined its therapeutic potential in clinical settings. As with any active compound, proper laboratory protocols and sterile handling are standard practice.
Grain (rye berries or wheat) is the most popular and reliable substrate for Golden Teacher. Compost, pasteurised dung, and straw also work well. Grain colonises evenly and can be broken up to spawn into bulk substrates for larger yields.
Temperature is almost always the answer. Colonisation needs 28-30 C consistently. Below 25 C, growth slows dramatically. Check your heat mat placement, use a thermometer directly on the substrate container, and make sure the room isn't dropping below 20 C overnight.
Golden Teacher produces some of the largest fruit bodies among common cubensis strains, with caps reaching up to 5 cm in diameter. B+ is comparable in size. McKennaii and PES Amazonian tend to produce smaller but more numerous fruits per flush.
