The DIPSE Sustainable Scale is a biodegradable pocket scale made from wheat straw fibre that delivers 0.01g precision across a 100g capacity. It measures 10 x 6.8 x 2cm, fits in your palm, and weighs next to nothing — yet it's sturdy enough for daily use. If you've been meaning to ditch plastic accessories, this is the easiest swap you'll make.
Most pocket scales are made from ABS plastic that'll outlast your grandchildren in a landfill. The DIPSE takes a different route — wheat straw fibre. It's a byproduct of grain production that would otherwise be burned or discarded, pressed into a material that's rigid, lightweight, and biodegradable. Pick it up and you'll notice it feels slightly different from standard plastic — a touch warmer, with a matte texture that doesn't show fingerprints. It's not flimsy, either. The casing has a reassuring density to it.
Here's the honest bit: it won't last forever. Wheat straw fibre is tougher than it sounds, but it's not going to survive being dropped on concrete the way a metal-cased scale might. Treat it with a minimum of care — don't sit on it, don't leave it in a puddle — and it'll serve you well for years. That's the trade-off for a scale that won't haunt the planet for centuries after you're done with it.
We've sold plastic pocket scales for over two decades. The DIPSE is the first biodegradable one we've stocked that doesn't compromise on accuracy. That 0.01g readout is genuine — we've tested it against calibration weights and it holds up. For the price, it's the best sustainable scale for herbs and concentrates we've come across.

Six units might sound excessive for a pocket scale, but each one serves a purpose. Here's what you're working with:
| Unit | Abbreviation | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| Grams | g | Standard metric — your default for herbs, resins, concentrates |
| Grains | gn | Traditional unit for powder measurement (1 grain = 0.065g) |
| Ounces | oz | Imperial weight — handy for recipes or US-based references |
| Carats | ct | Gemstone weight (1 carat = 0.2g) |
| Troy Ounces | ozt | Precious metals measurement |
| Pennyweights | dwt | Jewellery trade unit (1 dwt = 1.555g) |
For most of what you'll be doing, grams is the one. But having grains available is genuinely useful if you're measuring small quantities of powdered botanicals — 0.01g is roughly 0.15 grains, so you get finer-feeling increments at the low end.
We get a lot of customers asking whether 0.01g precision actually matters. Short answer: yes, especially for concentrates and resins where a tenth of a gram makes a real difference. If you're measuring out dried herb for tea, 0.1g precision is probably fine. But if you're portioning anything where small variations in weight change the experience — extracts, powdered botanicals, concentrated resins — that extra decimal place is what separates guessing from knowing.
The 100g capacity is the one limitation worth flagging. If you need to weigh larger quantities — say, a full bag of kratom powder or a bulk herb order — this isn't the scale for the job. It tops out at 100g and will flash an error if you exceed that. For anything over 100g, you'll want a kitchen scale with a higher capacity. But for portioning, for precision work, for anything under 100g, the DIPSE handles it cleanly.
One practical tip: the blue backlight is bright enough to read in dim conditions, which is more useful than you'd think. Festival prep at midnight, dimly lit kitchen — you can actually see what you're doing. The 2 AAA batteries last a surprisingly long time too, since the auto-shutoff prevents them draining when you forget to switch off (and you will forget).
Complete your setup with a proper storage solution. The DIPSE pairs well with our herb grinders for consistent particle size before weighing, and airtight stash jars to store your pre-measured portions. Very. The 0.01g precision holds up against calibration weights across the full 0-100g range. For context, 0.01g equals 10mg — precise enough for concentrates and fine powders where small differences matter.
Wheat straw fibre — a biodegradable byproduct of grain farming. It replaces the ABS plastic used in most pocket scales. The material is rigid and functional, with a slightly warmer, matte feel compared to standard plastic.
Check the packaging on arrival. The scale runs on 2 AAA batteries. Even if they're not included, AAA batteries are available at any corner shop — it's not a proprietary power source.
Yes. Place your tray or paper on the platform and press the tare button to zero it out. The scale subtracts the tray weight automatically, so you only measure the material itself.
For portioning herbs, resins, and concentrates — absolutely. 100g covers the vast majority of individual measuring tasks. If you regularly weigh quantities above 100g, you'll need a larger kitchen or tabletop scale alongside this one.
Several months with regular use. The auto-shutoff feature powers the scale down after inactivity, which saves significant battery life. The blue LED backlight draws minimal power from the 2 AAA batteries.
Durable enough for normal use — it won't crack from being carried in a bag or placed on a shelf. It's less impact-resistant than metal casings though, so avoid dropping it on hard surfaces. The trade-off for biodegradability is worth it for most people.
